Students and staff using wheelchairs can access the stage in Sarah Baartman Hall in a dignified manner by means of a lift.
Previously many students using wheelchairs chose to graduate in absentia rather than be capped in front of the stage. Now they can access the stage with their peers.
The lift also makes the stage accessible to staff and visitors using wheelchairs for other ceremonies or presentations.
Due to the nature of the lift as well as concerns related to the preservation of the aesthetics of Sarah Baartman Hall, the lift is not a standard access device for people with disabilities. It therefore does not provide 'independent' access to the stage but rather 'dignified' access.
It is used for ceremonies and other planned functions only and is operated in accordance with strict guidelines set out by UCT's Health and Safety Officer.
