Health Sciences students should contact the Health Sciences Faculty Office directly.
Commerce students, if you wish to appeal to re-enter the Commerce Faculty, please see the communication sent directly by that faculty. If you are a Commerce student and you have not received communication from the Commerce faculty, please contact email@example.com.
Please do not complete, save and send the Adobe Acrobat form to us on an Apple Mac - the form will be blank when viewed on a PC. Rather, print it out once you have completed it, and then scan and email, or fax it to us. You can also hand in the form at our office (see address to which you must send your appeal below).
Readmission Appeal Information
This website sets out the procedures you must follow if you wish to be readmitted to UCT in 2017.
Students academically excluded in December 2016 and February 2017 can appeal to the Readmission Appeal Committee. Students excluded in previous years (i.e. prior to 2016) can only apply via the Admissions Office.
An academic standing of 'not eligible to continue' (RENN) means that you are not permitted to renew your registration in 2017 as you have not met the minimum academic requirements to do so.
An academic standing of 'eligible to continue if SUPP/DE passed' (SUPP) means that your readmission to UCT in 2017 depends on the outcome of your supplementary/deferred examinations.
Each Faculty has a Readmission Appeal Committee (RAC). The RAC of a faculty considers appeals from its own students and appeals from students of other faculties who appeal to transfer.
The RAC is the only body that can consider your appeal. The RAC's decisions are final. No second or further appeal to a higher body is possible. This is why it is important to include all evidence of circumstances that would justify your readmission, in your appeal submission. Evidence may include, for example, medical/death certificates, sworn affidavits, travel itineraries, tickets, etc.
The Readmission Appeal Process
The Readmission Appeal Process
Step 1: Read this information sheet carefully.
Step 2: Complete the correct appeal form. There are two forms one for students coded RENN and another for students coded SUPP (make sure that you have completed the checklist at the end of this information sheet).
Step 3: Before you submit your appeal, keep a scanned copy or photocopy of your appeal form and supporting documentation. We strongly encourage you to submit your form electronically. This simplifies the process and allows for faster communication with the RAC. It also helps to ensure that your documents are not delayed or lost in the post.
Step 4: Send your appeal to the Student Records Office by the deadline date:
- Wednesday 01 March 2017 at 16h00/4pm for RENN and SUPP appeals
Step 5: The Student Records Office prepares an appeal folder that will be sent to your faculty's RAC. You do not need to include your UCT and matric results in your appeal documentation, it will be sent to the RAC for you.
Step 6: The RAC will consider your appeal.
Step 7: The RAC will write to you to inform you of their decision (for further information about this, please read the section titled 'Appeal Results').
Step 8: You need to have back-up plans for what you will do if your appeal is unsuccessful and you are denied readmission to UCT in 2017. Please do not wait until you know the outcome of your appeal to start planning for 2017 as you may be too late to enter another institution.
If you can show that at the end of 2017 your academic progress has improved significantly at another institution (e.g. Unisa), UCT may consider your application for study through the Admissions Office in 2018.
Reasons for Appeal
It is important to provide as much information and supporting evidence as possible, for the RAC to understand why you struggled academically through the year. These may include: accommodation problems, your financial situation, emotional problems, ill health, or family difficulties.
In considering appeals, the RAC looks for evidence of:
Options on the Appeal Form (Select one)
Please see the tables below for an explanation of the different options available to you with regard to readmission to UCT in 2017.
Please note that if you tick block A on the appeal form then you must also tick one of blocks A1, A2 or A3
|You apply to register for the same degree/diploma, but if your readmission is refused, and:|
|you do not want to return to UCT, then choose||A1|
|you want to register for a different diploma/degree in the same Faculty, then choose||A2|
|you want to register for a different diploma/degree in a different Faculty, then choose||A3|
|You apply to register for a different degree/diploma in another Faculty, but if your readmission is refused, and:|
|you do not want to return to UCT, then choose||B1|
|you want to register for a different diploma/degree in the same Faculty, then choose||B2|
|you want to register for a different diploma/degree in a different Faculty, then choose||B3|
Please note that indicating a second choice will in no way jeopardise your chances of being readmitted for your original choice. We encourage you to indicate both choices on your appeal form. However, you must choose carefully because you will not have the opportunity to request alternative considerations should your appeal be unsuccessful.
If you do indicate that you would like to change to a different Faculty, you should refer to the relevant Faculty website and electronic Faculty handbooks to find out what programmes they offer. If you choose to apply to a different Faculty, you must provide a motivation as to why you should be considered for entry into that Faculty.
